What Are Thermal Transfer Labels?
Thermal transfer labels are labels printed using a heat-based process, where a thermal printhead applies heat to a ribbon. The
ribbon transfers ink onto the label face stock, creating a sharp, durable image. These labels are commonly used for:
To ensure consistent label quality, the entire label construction - including face stock, adhesive, and liner - must be carefully
chosen. The release liner (often a silicone-coated film) plays a critical role in the process.
Why Silicone Release Film for
Thermal Transfer Labels?
Thermal transfer labels must go through a high-heat printing process and are often applied to curved or challenging surfaces, such as water drums or plastic barrels. Silicone release films offer several advantages for these applications:
a. High-Temperature Resistance
Thermal transfer printing requires exposure to elevated temperatures. Silicone-coated PET or PE films can withstand temperatures up to 200°C without deforming or releasing prematurely. This ensures smooth ribbon transfer and prevents curling or wrinkling.
b. Smooth Release Behavior
A controlled release force is crucial for label dispensers and applicators to function properly. Silicone release coatings offer low and uniform release force, ensuring that the labels separate smoothly during application - even in automated systems.
c. Dimensional Stability
PET-based silicone release liners are dimensionally stable, which means they won't shrink, expand, or warp during printing or converting. This consistency is essential for precise registration in printing processes.
d. Adhesive Compatibility
Most thermal transfer labels use pressure-sensitive adhesives. Silicone coatings are inert and compatible with a wide range of adhesives - from rubber-based to acrylics - ensuring no contamination or adhesive failure.
e. Clean & Dust-Free
Silicone release films have a clean surface that reduces the risk of static build-up or dust contamination, which could otherwise affect print quality or adhesive behavior.
f. Barrier Protection
Silicone-coated liners also act as a barrier, preventing moisture, solvents, or chemicals from seeping through the liner and affecting the adhesive or label face.
